about ImprovISA

Mission:
Grounded in its location along the US-Mexico border, the Institute for Improvisation and Social Action brings people together to create performances that engage with political, social and environmental issues. Our work is a collaborative and playful approach to social justice, healing and reconnection that supports the development of participants and their creative capacities.

Vision:

Improvising new realities for ourselves, others and the natural world.

our grounding

  • Improvised Performance: Improvisation as performance practice is at the core of everything we do.
  • Improvisation as Praxis: We use improvisation at every step of the creative process— from planning, to creation, to rehearsals, to performances— improvisation is our methodology.
  • Interdisciplinarity and Collaboration: We are committed to building collaboratively with and through multiple disciplines. ImprovISA's work springs from music and dance practices while building with our commitment to social justice, environmental restoration and healing.
  • Community Engagement: Our projects respond to needs in our region (or where we happen to make work) and build with other individuals and/or organizations that are addressing the issues we are tackling. Our performances are shaped collectively, and we invite the community to co-create them with us at every stage of the process.

Our unique approach supports participants to create new ways of relating to themselves, each other and the natural world, contributing to the individual and collective healing necessary to create a brighter future.

our goals

1. To create sustainable, generous and mutually beneficial relationships with our volunteers, participants and community partners where we make time for meaningful engagement and conversation.
2. To challenge systems of power (e.g. capitalism, patriarchy, colonialism) in all aspects of our work.

3. To design our projects mindfully, taking time to engage with the material deeply while caring for the relationships we are building.

4. To embed and foster family life and self-care at each stage of our process in order to create harmonious rhythm in our lives.
